A few words about John Lynn and how he became known as the Norfolk Wolf.
He started detecting back in the mists of time (well the 1960's) and he was well and truly hooked from that moment. His first detector believe it or not was home made, an ordinary broom-stick with a transistor radio Sello-taped to the bottom of it. The radio was off station on the medium wave and when it went over any type of metal in the ground it gave out an " 'orrible warble". Positioning a screwdriver a certain distance down the shaft of the broom stick offered a very basic form of discrimination, allowing half crowns and florins to be found! Boy, did he think he was cooking with gas.
Persevering with the early detectors was also very good grounding for later years, as unlike today with all the information on the web at your fingertips; you were on your own and any problems or questions had to be thought through, solved and answered by yourself.
He was given a second hand coin book and after reading through it, he came across the name of coin that he set his heart on finding; the Norfolk Wolf gold stater. He eventually found a hoard of them that trebled the amount that had been found before and then promptly found another hoard of them the following year! Other hoards have followed through the years, including a large bronze age hoard of axe- heads, gouges, daggers and spearheads.
The estate that allowed him to detect was sensitive towards any publicity, so what better name to use to write an article for a magazine, than the "nom de plume" of the Norfolk Wolf? That was way back in 1990 and it has stuck ever since.
Magazines in those days were no different than today where they still extol the virtues of a new detector as being "the best thing since sliced bread". After making a couple of purchases of new detectors based on those "field tests" results and finding that the detectors were no better than those he was already using; he decided to field test his own detectors and have the results published. Evidently his "warts an' all" type field tests were what the detecting fraternity wanted; as he has been in great demand ever since. John lives and breathes detecting, he actually gave up his job as a Casino manager in 1999 to detect full time. Part of this time is spent on a well known detecting forum in a technical and any questions answered, capacity.
Through the magazines he brought to the attention of detectorists, the terminology of Response speed and Recovery speed, these were explained through a series of photographs and the written word, along with articles on mineralisation and how to cope with it. With his easy to read and understand style of writing, people were forever asking for more and it culminated in him writing his best selling book "Advanced Detecting", this has been read in most of the countries where detecting takes place including Japan!
Recently John and his detecting buddy Stuart, produced the acclaimed XP explained DVD. "Not only sales, but also the feedback has been beyond anything they imagined". There are another two more in the pipeline for this year.
I think you must have gotten the message by now that if you purchase your next detector from NorfolkWolf.co.uk, you can guarantee that you won’t be stuck out on some field with all sorts of problems when John will be just an e-mail away with the solution.
