This venue was arranged by an xp forum member, (Mick detect) and what a good job he made of it. If it wasn’t for the people like Mick to sort things out for me, these talks wouldn’t even get off the ground.

I am beginning to think that someone watches my departure preparations, “Quick he’s sticking his detectors in the car, phone him now and keep him talking for half an hour or so. You’ve got him now, he’s carting out his suitcase”. It was a full 2 hours later than I wanted before I managed to get on the road.

That Geezer who growls about the road to hell don’t know nuffin’, he ought to try to get to Bolton from King’s Lynn. One minute you’re thacking along at 80 miles an hour; followed by an hour at 30 mph. Scenery is nice though, that is if you like looking at the arse-end of a buccaneer caravan for hours on end.

I had to go through Stockport, one of the people at the talk came from there, (a really good bloke too); but as regards the place I can’t even say that the best thing to come out of there are the roads. The people are great and the slow way the traffic moves, you get all the time in the world to see them. Anyway enough of this griping, I arrived at the hotel.

It was a Victorian edifice with matching fittings and personnel.

I rang the bell at reception and this stand in for Lurch out of the Adams family came out.

Christ! He was about 6 feet 15inches tall with this shock of grey hair, but it was his teeth that caught your attention. Talk about gravestones, if he had sneezed he would have nailed himself to the desk!

“No, they didn’t do an evening meal and you pay up front”. I always say there’’s nothing like Northern humour.

Went up to my room, put the Kettle on and went to hang up my clothes. I opened the wardrobe doors to find that it wasn’t a wardrobe but a series of shelving; when were coat hangers first introduced?

Met up with Mick and went to look at the farm and meet the farmer.

The place was perfect for what we wanted and there was tea and burger stand that would be open on the day, Brilliant.

The day was warm and sunny, people started to arrive and each and every one of them had a smile. This was going to go well.

I don’t have a set “menu” so to speak, I like to let things work out for themselves; if the questions are flowing it makes it easier for me.

These guys asked all the right questions (although there are no wrong questions); they really did want to learn and took their detecting seriously.

The afternoon was spent one on one out on the fields and although nothing outstanding came to light there were plenty of good signals.

At the end of the day, one guy summed it up. “I’ve had a cracking day, learnt a lot and without having to wade through any of the usual bullshit. Thanks John, it’s been good to meet you”.

That my friends made the long journey home so much easier.

Now then what has Leicester got in store me this coming Sunday?

Quick note to say thanks for a great day on Sunday at Bolton. Just read the write up on your web site, it’s true we really did enjoy it - the sun and the burgers were great and you were OK! Seriously though it was good to meet you and I’ve arranged for you to spend your next holiday in Stockport, detecting the banks of the Mersey under the motorway bridge - classy.

Hi John I was lucky enough to attend the Bolton training day, I’m the one with the CORDED headphones! Just thought I’d drop you a line to say how much both me and Neal Blath enjoyed the day we had, Learned a lot and maybe I’ll buy a Garrett so I can go again. Many thanks and carry on the good work, and I’ll try to get some cordless headphones for next time so you won’t curse me when you can’t connect to my machine.
